Baccarat or Baccarat is a classic casino card game that is present in the biggest and best online casinos. Live baccarat tables are a favorite of players who play online, as they always have very high betting limits, more like the way the game is played in land-based casinos.

Baccarat tables are usually in a more private area of the casino and all players who want to play must be dressed according to a dress code and cover the minimum betting amount, which usually tends to be quite high. In online baccarat games, on the other hand, the betting limits vary so that all players can be included in the game and freely choose the table they want to participate in.

In New Zealand, Baccarat is a little-played and not very well-known card game. However, it is one of the best games you can play in casinos, as the house edge is one of the smallest. In addition, Baccarat is very easy to learn how to play and does not require any special strategies such as poker and the blackjack . In fact, with just some practice it is already possible to master the game and become a great Baccarat player. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know about Baccarat: best casinos to play at, Game Rules, How to play, and how to win.

Best casinos to play baccarat online

Types of online Baccarat

The game of Baccarat has not changed much since it was created in the fifteenth century. after being popularized in casinos around the world in the twentieth century and with the beginning of online casinos, Baccarat has also entered the home of players. In online casinos, you will be able to find three types of baccarat games.

Baccarat Video

The first is video Baccarat, which resembles video poker: the player plays on a machine similar to slots (pokies) and the minimum and maximum bet limits are usually lower.

Live Baccarat

The second is live baccarat, in which bet amounts often reach substantial amounts. We talk more about it in the section dedicated to live Baccarat, further down.

Mini Baccarat

The third type of baccarat that you will find in online casinos is mini baccarat. This variation of Baccarat has different rules and generally low betting amounts, to make it accessible to players of all kinds. In this game, only seven players are allowed at the table (as opposed to 14) and the game thus becomes faster.

Learn to play baccarat

Baccarat does not require special skills to play. Everyone can easily learn and move on to betting at baccarat tables. The player, in reality, only needs to decide which bet to make. The rest of the game is driven by predetermined rules. Below you will find the baccarat rules and all the information about the value of the cards and the possible bets.

Rules of the game

The goal of baccarat is for the player to bet on the hand of cards that adds up to 9 points or that comes closest to that. If this happens, the player wins the bet.

Two hands are drawn from the deck in each round. Each hand has two cards and it is the dealer who puts them on the table. The two hands are divided between: player's hand (player) and banker's hand (banker). You can bet on any of them and also bet on the tie of the two. After placing the bets, the dealer will give his hands and we will be able to see which of them has added points closer to 9.

Baccarat is a game in which the player bets on the outcome of the hands opened by the dealer. The players themselves do not receive cards, unlike the black jack and poker games. The only decision the player makes per round is the bet he makes: either bet that the player's hand will win, or bet that the banker's hand will win, or bet on the tie of the two hands.

If the player's hand scores 8 or 9 points first, it automatically wins unless the banker's hand draws with it. And if any of the hands exceeds 9 points, they are not disqualified, but 10 points are subtracted from the result. For example, an 8 + 8 hand adds up to 16 points. 16 minus 10 makes 6. 6 is the value of that hand.

Resuming, we will look at the Basic Rules of the game:

  • The aim of the game is for you to bet on the hand that comes closest to 9 points.
  • Each hand has two cards and can be dealt more if necessary. However, this is never decided by the player, but by the predetermined rules of the casino.
  • You can choose between betting on the player's hand, the banker's hand or the tie of the two.
  • Each card has a value. Cards numbered from 1 to 9 are worth their number, the 10, Jack, Queen and King are worth 0, and the Ace is worth one.
  • If a hand adds more than 9 points, the value is subtracted by 10 and a new value is given to the hand. For example, if the banker is dealt a hand of 6 + 9 = 15, his actual result will be 15 – 10 = 5. In this way, every time the cards exceed the limit of 9 points, the hand is not considered “lost”, as in blackjack, but it still counts so that the game decides which of the hands comes closest to the 9.
  • The game is played with six decks or more.
  • A hand that makes 8 face points is called Le Petit, and a hand that makes 9 Face points is called Le Grande. If any of these hands are drawn, it wins and the round ends unless there is a tie.
  • For more details on the rules of the game, visit our guide on how to play baccarat.

Game table

The Baccarat table is divided so that each player has his own place to place the chips. The Baccarat table played in land-based casinos, and usually in Live Games, holds 14 players and is governed by three dealers. Mini baccarat has only seven players and is governed by a dealer.

At the table, the place indicated as "Player" is where you place the chips when you bet that the player's hand will win the round. The place indicated as “Banker " is where you place the chips if you are going to bet on the banker's hand. Further up, in the place called "Tie", is where you bet on the tie of the hands.

If you are familiar with the table of give , you will notice that the Baccarat table works the same way. Simply place your bet at the place on the table that indicates your choice. After the dealer shows the cards, he will pay the winning bets and collect the losing bets.

Card values

Baccarat Card values are quite easy to understand. Unlike poker, there is no need to memorize the names of the hands, since they are not governed by a hierarchy. It is enough to know the value of the cards to be able to add up the result of points of the hand. See below.

  • Cards from 1 to 9-are worth their respective number.
  • Ace-Worth 1.
  • 10, Jack, Queen and King-are worth 0.
  • Suits are irrelevant when counting the value of Cards.

Possible bets

Possible Baccarat bets are laid out on the game table. They are three:

Bet on the player's hand.

This bet pays 1:1 and the house edge is low compared to all other casino games. Only 1.24%.

Bet on the banker's hand.

Pays 19: 20, because the casino receives a fee of 5% of the amount of your bet, if you win. The house edge, however, is smaller, at just 1.06%. This happens because the banker's hand wins approximately 4 times more than the player's hand, when the game is played with eight decks.

Bet on a draw.

It's the worst bet you can make because you have the lowest chance of winning. Because of this, it pays 8 times the amount of your bet, if you win. The house edge is 14.44%, which is considered very high.

How to win in baccarat?

Now that you know how to play baccarat, do you also want to know how to win in the game? Baccarat is, like all casino game , a game of chance, and there is no way to guarantee a win. However, there are ways to make better choices and bets than others, and thus increase your chances of winning.

Some of the best gambling strategies, you will discover, are based on the odds of winning and the house edge, as each bet has a different percentage and so some are considered better than others. The good news is that the advantage in baccarat is very small, one of the smallest of all casino games, and that is why it is so important to know how to take advantage of it.

Baccarat odds and strategies

The best Baccarat strategy takes into account the odds of winning for each bet (remember that here, counting the probability, 0 means that it is impossible to win, and 1 means that the win is 100% guaranteed).

  • Cards from 1 to 9-are worth their respective number.
  • The bet on the banker's hand has a winning probability of 0.45.
  • The player's hand has a winning probability of 0.44.
  • The odds of a draw are 0.09.

What you may notice above is that the banker bet has a slightly higher chance of winning than the player bet, while the tie bet is much worse than the others.

In this sense, we can conclude that the odds of the player's hand winning are lower than the odds of the banker's hand losing. This happens because the banker's hand is drawn after the player's hand, and he can then draw another card from the deck or not. To balance the odds, a player who wins the banker bet must always pay a 5% commission to the casino. However, despite the commission, the bet on the banker remains better than the bet on the player.

Therefore, the best Baccarat strategy is to bet on the banker's hand every time, and avoid betting on the tie as much as possible, which has minimal chances of winning. If we leave out the tie bet, we can conclude that the banker's hand has a 51% chance of winning, and the player's hand, therefore, 49%.

Knowing these numbers and the rules of the game is the best strategy to win, not least because most other players do not know the statistics of baccarat and bet on impulse. Also, it is good to know that because the house edge is so low, the minimum bets of baccarat tables are usually not small. In online casinos, however, it is normal for the casino to offer tables of varying values for players to choose how much they want to bet.

Another great strategy is to train by playing online for free before betting with money. Right here at New ZealandCasinos, you'll find a free Baccarat game to test your knowledge of the game and get ready to bet for real.

House edge and payout

The house edge is different for each bet, as is the payout. See in the table below.

Banker 95% of the bet 1.06%
Player 100% of the bet 1.24%
Draw 8 times the bet 14.44%

Live Baccarat

Most players who play baccarat online play live, since the live game is more immersive and the tables usually have much higher betting limits. High rollers love the live tables.

When you play with the live dealer, most likely other players will be playing at the same table, and then you can chat with them and the dealer during the game. The dealer will deal the cards and the player must only place their bets by clicking on the chips and the table. Playing live is the most common way to play baccarat online.
